Things to see and do
Whether you like to get away and just put your feet up and relax, or would prefer to take in many of the sights of Dumfries and Galloway, there is plenty for you to do while you stay at Viewfield Cottage. Here are some ideas to start you planning your holiday...
Wigtown - Book Town. Book worms will love the enchanted range of second-hand book shops that Wigtown has to offer. You can spend hours scouring shops and the shelves for a must-read novel. There are various cafes for lunch and there is a great walk along to the Martyr's Stake, overlooking Wigtown Bay. Wigtown is Scotland's National Book Town and the host of the annual Wigtown Book Festival - 23 September to 2 October 2011.
The Galloway Forest Park is Britain's largest of 300 square miles. Visitors can enjoy some of the various walks, photograph the stunning scenery, or cycle the range of 7 Stanes mountain bike trails at Kirroughtree which have been rated some of the best in Europe. The Galloway Forest Park has recently just become the UK's first Dark Skies Park.
Glen Trool and Clattingshaws are also a scenic drive away and feature cafes, great walks, beautiful scenery and mountain bike trails. The walk around Loch Trool can be a breathtaking experience. Make sure you take your camera.
If you fancy climbing the highest hill in the area - the Merrick - of 843m, it starts from Glen Trool car park and has spectacular views to Ireland and the Isle of Man. In fact, it boasts the furthest distance that you can see anywhere in the UK. Ie. you can see all the way to Snowdon in Wales on a clear day.
Just three miles from Viewfield is Scotland's most southerly distillery - Bladnoch Distillery. Take a tour, sample some produce and shop in the gift shop.
Many food producers are based in Galloway. Visit Castle Douglas to try some of the produce from the region or for those with a sweet tooth, why not visit the Cream of Galloway - a local ice cream manufacturer, who now exports their organic ice cream all the way to Japan. The Cream of Galloway is a great day out for families, with plenty of activities to take part in.
Scotland's most southerly point - the Mull of Galloway - is a wonderful location to visit the lighthouse and cafe.
Viewfield is also just a short drive from several beaches which are great for families. The area as a great selection of golf courses and of course, historic landmarks for you to explore.
Artists are attracted to Galloway for the simple reason - that it IS incredibly beautiful. Therefore the area has many small galleries to visit. There are also fabulous gardens such as Castle Kennedy, Logan Botanic and Galloway House Esate.
